Saint Nicholas Day Resources

St. Nicholas Day Resources

Happy Saint Nicholas Day!

Our family has chosen to celebrate the feast day of Saint Nicholas for many years, taking the opportunity to teach our children about the real person behind the legend of Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas was a bishop of Myra in the 3rd century who was known for his acts of kindness and generosity. Over time, many legends developed about him and eventually evolved into the Santa Claus story.

Here are the books and videos we go back to year after year to learn more about St. Nick:

More Than a Holiday: A 25 Day Christmas Devotional for the Whole Family {Giveaway!}

More Than a Holiday: A 25 Day Christmas Devotional for the Whole Family

You’ve probably gathered that Advent is a big deal in our family, and it’s fast approaching!

We love doing our Advent calendar, our wreath, and reading Advent stories and devotionals together to prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate Christ’s coming! Encouraging you by sharing what we do and recommending tools to help you create your own family traditions is important to me. I’ve highlighted a couple of new books in the last couple of weeks that I think are worth considering, and today I’ve got another one!

More Than a Holiday: A 25 Day Christmas Devotional for the Whole Family by Scott and Sarah Nichols is a unique devotional because it was designed to be flexible for the needs, constraints, time-limits, and age-range of your family. I don’t know about you, but our family is super busy at this time of year! Christmas plays, The Nutcracker performances, family functions, and more take up the little free time we do have, and yet we’re committed to making observing Advent a priority also. [Read more…]

Why Christ Came: 31 Meditations on the Incarnation {An Advent Devotional}

Why Christ Came

It’s that time of year when my thoughts begin to turn to the fast approaching Advent season.

Our family, from youngest to oldest, looks forward all year to Advent and the special things we do together to recognize the season and prepare our hearts for Christmas. It’s kind of a hobby of mine to collect devotionals and resources we can use to help us focus on the season.

One of my most recent acquisitions is Why Christ Came: 31 Meditations on the Incarnation. This little devotional is a unique twist on the usual. Instead of just focusing on the Christmas story as told in the Gospels, it delves into all of Scripture to show how essential the incarnation is and why Christ came. [Read more…]

Jim Elliot: One Great Purpose (Review Crew)

Jim Elliot: One Great Purpose (Family Bookshelf)

The story of Jim Elliot and his companions is truly amazing.

It’s captured my attention since I first heard of it, and the more I learn, the more amazing I find it. I’ve read about it in his wife, Elisabeth Elliot’s, writings, and our family has read the accounts, watched movies, and discussed it many times.

For the last few weeks, Karate Kid (12) has been reading Jim Elliot: One Great Purpose, part of YWAM’s Christian Heroes: Then and Now series, and doing some of the activities in the accompanying unit study guide. I read the book first and then passed it on to him. We’ve really enjoyed other titles in this series that we’ve read, and this one was no exception! [Read more…]

Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures (A Review from www.homewithpurpose.net)

One of our goals in educating our children is to make sure they have a heart for missions. They need to understand God’s purpose for the entire world, how all cultures and people exist to glorify Him, and that our Western culture is just a small part of the big world that God created.

One of my fellow Schoolhouse Review Crew members, Gwen Toliver, who together with her family works with Wycliffe Associates,  has put together a collection of adventure stories about twenty-one modern missionaries who are working to provide the Bible in the indigenous languages of people across the globe, called Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures. We’ve been enjoying working our way through these stories as a family for the last several weeks. [Read more…]

Timothy: A Little Fish with a Big Purpose (Family Bookshelf)

Timothy: A Little Fish With a Big Purpose (A Review From www.homewithpurpose.net)

We are a book-loving family. We love all kinds and genres, but literature holds a special place in our hearts. Story can be a powerful teaching tool…have you ever noticed how often Jesus taught using stories? Needless to say, I’m always on the lookout for well done children’s books that communicate Biblical truth in an engaging way.
