Progeny Press Study Guides: Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney (Review Crew)

Miss Rumphius -

The award winning children’s book Miss Rumphius has been a favorite in our family for at least 15 years.

It’s one of those that I’ve read so many times, I have it memorized. So, when I discovered that Progeny Press offers a downloadable digital study guide for Miss Rumphius, I thought it would be fun to take a look at it. We’ve used and enjoyed other Progeny Press study guides for The Golden Goblet, The Hunger Games, The Giver, and several other titles, but we’ve never used one for the lower levels.

Literature plays a huge role in our homeschool, from the very earliest age on. Not only because I feel like they’re more effective than textbooks, but also because I feel that many books, movies, and other media offer us a fantastic opportunity to illustrate aspects of the gospel for our kids. I love what this article says about it:

So many elements in arts and media affirm aspects of the gospel. The children’s stories Love You Forever and The Runaway Bunny resemble the unflinching love of God in books with no religious terminology. Even the music of Lady Gaga, Pink, Eminem, or Katy Perry sometimes express the deep human longing and shows the universal need for the gospel. For young people to see the truths of Christianity lived out in the world affirms belief that the Christian message is real. Having this skill of discernment will enable them to turn arts and media into a source of encouragement as they enter the world as adults.

In line with this philosophy, Progeny Press literature study guides fit into our family’s educational plan very well! Progeny Press is a family-owned and operated business that offers over 100 literature study guides for kindergarten through high school, focusing on critical thinking, comprehension, literary analysis, and Christian application. Their mission is: “To teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on the scripture for truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!”

Each guide begins with a short synopsis of the book and biographical sketch on the author. This is followed with several suggested prereading activities. Since this is a picture book, the guide is divided into three sections, rather than going by chapter like the guides we’ve used for the older grades. These are followed by an After-You-Read Activities section, Related Resources, and an Answer Key.

Miss Rumphius is the story of Alice Rumphius, who longed to do something to make the world more beautiful. She became known as the Lupine Lady because of all the beautiful lupines that bloom up and down the coast of Maine, a legacy of the seeds she scattered there.

After beginning with a study of various Bible verses and nature study activities on seeds and plants, each section of the guide has vocabulary words, comprehension questions, art study of the illustrations, plus a “Digging Deeper” section with deeper, more thought provoking questions, and a “Projects and Activities” section with suggestions for extending the concepts. There are art and geography activities, a Bible study on hospitality, and more.

Progeny Press Study Guide: Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney - HomeWithPurpose.netI tend to use these guides in a pretty relaxed fashion, especially for the younger levels. We use them as a springboard for discussion rather than a formal assignment. Kendall (9) and I went through the Miss Rumphius guide over the span of a couple of weeks, with Kade (6) popping in and out also. We’ve looked up Bible verses and discussed some of the questions, looked up information on lupines (which was made even more interesting by the fact that our Texas state flower, the bluebonnet, is a lupine), and more. I really enjoyed some of the questions and discussion about hospitality.

Just as with the other Progeny Press literature study guides we’ve used, this one has a been a valuable addition to our studies! I’m impressed with them. They’re well written, thorough, user-friendly, and available for a wide variety of literature suitable for all reading levels. I highly recommend them as part of your literature plan!
