Our family loves fun games we can play together!
Life is busy and time is at a premium, but we enjoy doing things as a family, whether it’s watching a movie, reading a classic book aloud, or playing a board or Wii game. A few weeks ago, Out of the Box Games sent us their award-winning game Snake Oil to try out. Snake Oil is a fun, easy to learn game for ages ten and up based on the concept of the Old West “snake oil salesman”, who had a special talent for selling dubious products to skeptical customers.
The game requires a minimum of three, but up to ten, players, and consists of two sets of cards: Word Cards and Customer Cards. Each player takes a turn being the Customer, while the other players are the “salesmen”. Six word cards are dealt to each player. The Customer draws a Customer Card, which has an option on each side of the card of a type of customer. For example, one card may give an option for them to be a dumpster diver or a diva, another says they can be a super hero or a zombie. Once they decide which one they want to be, the other players quickly combine any two Word Cards from their hand to create a “product” for the customer, and then take turns pitching their product to the Customer. The Customer chooses which product they like best, and that player receives their Customer Card. Play continues until each player has had a chance to be the Customer, and at the end of the round, the player who has collected the most Customer Cards wins!
This video will give you a good idea of how it goes:
What a hilarious, creative game!
We’ve had a blast playing this with the older kids (16 and 13)! Depending on the cards in your hand, coming up with a product that fits the customer can be pretty challenging. It really requires quick thinking and creativity, and the card combinations and pitches that result are absolutely hysterical! For example, would you like to try to sell a pair of muscle goggles to a gangster? We’ve laughed until we cried in pretty much every round we’ve played so far.
I love that this is a fun family activity that isn’t passive like watching a movie, and requires us to interact with each other and use our brains. Plus it’s simple to learn, with no complicated rules, and each round is fairly short, meaning it can easily be played even if time is short. It’s creating fun family memories and inside jokes every time we play. The kids are also looking forward to introducing their friends to it, and I think it would be a fantastic game to use in a drama club or speech class – talk about thinking on your feet, communication skills, and improvisation!
Now that we’ve played it several times, I’m thinking that we may be able to include Kendall (8) and Kade (5), even though the suggested age range is 10+. With some assistance combining cards, they can probably do a decent job of pitching a product, and I’ve also thought about having them “team up” with a parent or older sibling so they can participate.
If you’re like us and enjoy creative, fun games for the whole family, definitely give Snake Oil a look!
The game retails for $19.99 and is available at major retailers like Amazon.
