I know I’ve said it multiple times, but I’m saying it again: our family really enjoys high quality audio dramas.
They’re fantastic in the car, at bedtime, and in various other situations. Over the years, we’ve amassed quite a collection, and everyone from the high schooler to the kindergartner has their favorites that they don’t mind listening to over and over. Still, we’re always up for something new too.
So, I was excited when we received a copy of Under Drake’s Flag: The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty from Heirloom Audio Productions to review. We’ve long been fans of Henty’s novels, and this audio drama is based on one of them. Henty, who wrote in the late 19th century and was nicknamed the “Prince of Storytellers”, was known for his exciting, historically accurate adventure stories with strong Christian themes.
Under Drake’s Flag tells the story of Sir Francis Drake through the eyes of a teen named Ned and his friend Gerald, as they accompany the explorer on his discoveries and adventures across the Pacific. This audio drama of the story, aimed at ages six and up, is over two hours long, and includes a downloadable study guide.
The whole family enjoyed listening to this story, but it’s especially appealing for boys, with its shark attack, shipwreck, battles, and much more. My two boys have played it several times as a bedtime story in their room. In fact, Kyle (13) specifically asked me to put it on his iPod so he could play it for himself and his little brother (5). The quality of this production is fantastic! It’s a high-quality, professional recording featuring very talented actors. It ranks right up there with family favorites like The Chronicles of Narnia audio dramas in caliber.
Not only is it an exciting adventure story, it brings history alive and and teaches kids about courage, conviction, and character. G.A. Henty was known for his meticulous research and historical accuracy. I’ve long been a firm believer that the best way to learn history is through literature and story, and that’s how we’ve always approached it. Under Drake’s Flag is a perfect example of that method in practice.
The CDs come with an abridged study guide. For each chapter of the story, there are several “Listening Well” comprehension questions, “Thinking Further” critical thinking questions, and vocabulary words. The incredibly moving Prayer of Sir Francis Drake is also printed on the CD case. There are also three short Bible studies: Godly Character, True Manhood, and Confessing Christ. The complete study guide, available as a PDF download, is in the same format as the abridged guide, but features more questions and vocabulary, with the Bible studies fleshed out a bit more.
Under Drake’s Flag has been a big hit for us, and I’m looking forward to seeing (hearing – 🙂 ) more productions from Heirloom Audio Productions! I highly recommend it, both for the family discipleship toolbox, and as a resource for bringing history alive!
