Four Calling Birds (The REAL Twelve Days of Christmas)

The Real Twelve Days of Christmas

Merry fourth day of Christmas!

The Christmas season, or Christmastide, doesn’t actually begin until Christmas Day, lasting for the next twelve days until the Feast of Epiphany,  on January 6, and celebrating the Incarnation: “God With Us”! These are the days referred to in the popular Christmas carol. So, we’re celebrating each day with a short explanation and thought. If you’re coming into the series late, click here to start with the first day:)

Here’s day four:

On the fourth day of Christmas, my True Love gave to me four calling birds…

Different types of calling birds have unique songs. Each of the four Gospels gives us a unique perspective of Jesus. So, the birds in the song represent Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

I just finished reading the Gospels in my chronological bible reading plan and it’s so interesting to read how each writer portrayed the same events side by side! Each Gospel is written with a different audience in mind and each focuses on different aspects of Jesus’ life and purpose, so together they give a complete picture. I really enjoyed the book Discovering Jesus: Why Four Gospels to Portray One Person? to really delve in and study them. This book truly gave me a new appreciation for the uniqueness, order, and purpose of each Gospel and how beautifully they complement each other. You can read my review of it here.

Do you remember the gift for day five? A hint on what it represents: it’s very similar to today’s! More on it tomorrow.
