{A Giveaway!} Fit to Burst: Abundance, Mayhem, and the Joys of Motherhood (Mom's Bookshelf) - Home With Purpose

{A Giveaway!} Fit to Burst: Abundance, Mayhem, and the Joys of Motherhood (Mom’s Bookshelf)

Fit to Burst: Abundance, Mayhem, and the Joys of Motherhood (A Review from www.homewithpurpose.net)

About a year and a half ago I reviewed a little book called Loving the Little Years: Motherhood in the Trenches by a young mom, Rachel Jankovic. At the time, Rachel had five children under the age of five, including a set of twins, so she literally was writing from the trenches!

Now, another child and a couple of years later, she’s written a follow-up, Fit to Burst: Abundance, Mayhem, and the Joys of MotherhoodThe format is similar to the first book: eighteen short, devotional chapters (what she calls “field notes”) on various topics related to motherhood and parenting.

Here’s the table of contents, just to whet your appetite:

  1. The Paradox Perspective
  2. The Unbaked Biscuit
  3. The Mean Boss
  4. Panning for Gold
  5. Discipleship of the Mundane
  6. When the Milkshake Runs Low
  7. The Time is Now
  8. Home Fires
  9. A Table Saved
  10. Well Eating
  11. Faith Grows
  12. Ungraceful Parenting
  13. Judgey Pants
  14. Wound Up
  15. A Little Morning Rugby
  16. Popping the Weasel
  17. The Long-Term View
  18. It Ever Shall Be

Rachel writes with transparency, humility, and humor. From the Forward:

“I don’t pull punches or hold back in this book, because I am writing to myself as much as to you. If something in this book strikes a little close to home for you, know that it struck in my home first. I am not writing about other people’s problems, although I know many of them are common. I write about what I know, and what I know is the challenges, the joys, and the work involved in raising little people.

If you don’t want to be challenged, then don’t read this book. If you are just looking for sympathy and an eye-roll about the work you do, just mention you have children to someone at the grocery store.

This book is a collection of ‘field notes’ from a mom seeking to honor the Lord in her daily life. It isn’t a method or a system, because it is messy, just like the life I am busy living.”

What a treasure! Rachel has done it again. I could pretty much just copy and paste most everything I said about Loving the Little Years. Once again, each short chapter is direct and to the point, yet filled with grace and insight, and they’re just the right length for this challenging season of life.

I love that Rachel focuses on the heart rather than just the externals, and yet still manages to be incredibly practical.

She captures the craziness of this season of life, but avoids the trap of sliding into negativity about it, or portraying it as something we just have to suck it up and endure. She manages to make the mundane profound, and grace permeates every word.

I loved Fit to Burst. It manages to encourage, refresh, and challenge in the perfect format and length for busy moms to digest. I think both it and Loving the Little Years are must reads for every mom of young children!

I started out trying to make a list of a few of the best quotes to share with you, but I just can’t narrow it down! You’re just going to have to get the book and read it!

And speaking of getting the book, I have a copy to send to one of you! 🙂
