Spiritual Development and Practical Bible Study Skills for Young Men: Because You Are Strong from Doorposts (Review Crew)

Spiritual Development and Practical Bible Study Skills for Young Men

If you know me, you are probably aware that I think Christ-centered family discipleship should be a huge priority! Over the last several years I’ve highlighted numerous resources and companies that provide material to assist us in doing this. One company I haven’t covered yet is Doorposts. We’ve used and loved Doorposts products for years. Their posters have hung in our hallway since the Dancer (15) and Karate Kid (12) were preschoolers, and we own and have used many of their other materials through the years.

A few weeks ago, we received an ebook copy of Because You Are Strong: A Study of Godly Strength For Young Men to try out with Karate Kid. Because You Are Strong is designed for young men age 12 and up, although it also contains alternate questions to adapt the study for young women if desired. During the ten in-depth studies, boys learn not only a Biblical view of strength, but also practical bible study skills like how to use a concordance, do a word study, or do a character study.

Each study focuses on a biblical hero like David, Samson, or the “mighty men of valor”, or an important concept like the power of God or the service of Jesus, and teaches a different method of Bible study. They’re broken down into daily assignments meant to take 5-20 minutes each.

The ten studies include:

  1. Strength for the Race: Meditating on Hebrews 11-12
  2. Strength with no Limits: A Topical Study on the Omnipotence of God
  3. Strength and Wisdom: A Topical Study in Proverbs
  4. Strength and Temptation: A Character Study of Samson
  5. Strength to be Valiant: A Word Study on “Valor”
  6. Strength in Our Weakness: A Verse Study on 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
  7. Strength in the Battle: A Chapter Study of 1 Samuel 17
  8. Strength Serving Others: A Study of Jesus’ Actions in the Gospel of Mark
  9. Strength and Gray Heads: A Verse Study of Proverbs 20:29
  10. Strength in the Faith: A Book Study of 1 John

There are 74 days worth of study included, plus another 40 suggested studies, so there’s enough here to encompass an entire year if desired.

Karate Kid has worked his way through the first two studies so far, and is in the midst of learning about wisdom in the Proverbs this week. Each week, I print out the next study and he puts it in his folder and works through the daily assignments independently. I did help him with the first day using the Nave’s Topical Bible to make sure he had the hang of it, but for the most part he’s able to do it without assistance. I check over each day’s assignment and discuss it with him after he’s done.

So far he’s really enjoying it! He likes digging for answers himself rather than just being fed information, so the format is very appealing to him. The studies are short but meaty, perfect for keeping him engaged and fitting into the daily schedule. I really like how each study focuses not only on a different aspect of Godly strength, but on a different method of study, so he’s feeding his heart and spirit, while also developing skills that will serve him well for the rest of his life. At twelve, he’s on the young end of the suggested age range, but the directions are clearly laid out and I feel like he’s getting plenty out of it. He does the study willingly, and brings up what he’s learned in conversation, so I know it’s making an impression on him.

The bottom line?

We think Because You Are Strong is a fantastic topical study for young men, valuable not only for spiritual development but for learning practical Bible study skills. You can see the table of contents and entire first study here. It’s available in physical ($14.00, but currently on sale for $12.00) or ebook format ($10.00).
